Priority during a power cut

All energy suppliers in the UK provide extra advice and support people who have extra communication, access or safety needs.

Who can sign up?

People may want to register if they:

  • Are deaf or hard of hearing

  • Have a disability

  • Live with children under 5

  • Are blind or partially sighted

  • Have a chronic illness

  • Use medical equipment or aids that rely on electricity

  • Are over 60

  • Feel that they need extra support (temporarily or long-term).

What is priority service?

By signing up, it helps energy companies to tailor their services to meet your needs. Priority Services include:

  • If people use medical equipment or aids that need electricity SSEN will try to provide extra support during prolonged power cuts.

  • SSEN will contact people if they are aware of a power cut affecting thieir home and provide regular updates.

  • People can ask SSEN to advice on how to prepare for power cuts taking into account people’s circumstances and needs.

  • SSEN will agree a ‘password’ with people so that they can be sure that anyone who says they work for SSEN really do, (protecting people from scammers).
